Hal Incandenza, Infinite Jest, David Foster Wallace
Hal is the only extant Incandenza who looks in any way ethnic. His late father had been as a young man darkly tall, high flat Pima-tribe cheekbones and very black hair Brylcreemed back so tight there’d been a kind of enforced widow’s peak. Himself had looked ethnic, but he isn’t extant. Hal is sleek, sort of radiantly dark, almost otterish, only slightly tall, eyes blue but darkly so, and unburnable even w/o sunscreen, his untanned feet the color of weak tea, his nose ever unpeeling but slightly shiny. His sleekness isn’t oily so much as moist, milky; Hal worries secretly that he looks half-feminine.  (Multiple suggestions, and happy 50th birthday)

neillisgood:

I just attended one of the most fun/emotional/amazing shows I’ve ever been to. Latterman is the best Long Island band ever.

Here’s the new (not really) song they played tonight.

Thanks for ripping this! If anyone wants it, I snagged the mp3 from neil and uploaded it here: http://www.mediafire.com/?ycxakzcw3uh0eq8

Cat Flag Meow War

This is amazing!

Cat Flag Meow War

This is actually pretty purrfect…or at least how I saw it in my head. Great job Controllableurge for making this!

:D This one looks AWESOME! BTW I hung up a couple of the prints you’ve given me at my apartment. “You can never let people despair” is right by the front door and the 3x3 with “good luck getting god on the phone” and “we never made it that far west” (I think?) and one more is in my kitchen!

This one looks better than both of those though, wowowowowooo

I would love a giant poster of this, like 6’x4’ or something. PLEASE make this happen!

Design by Chris Ayers

I wonder what a casual, uninitiated viewer would make of this. I imagine it would probably be incomprehensible. What I would give to be able to read Infinite Jest’s Eschaton chapter again for the first time. I distinctly remember being in a restaurant when I read it because the other patrons kept looking at me as I tried unsuccessfully to stifle laughter.

I used Sam Potts’ character map of Infinite Jest as a starting point and then expanded upon it. This isn’t meant to be a comprehensive play-by-play; I only listed the main events that lead to the scuffle at the end of the chapter. When it is clear that a particular player launched a warhead I have tried to indicate that. Otherwise the vectors come from the state. It is not clear exactly how many players participated in this game, but it is at least nine and not more than twelve. Eight of them are named and the player representing REDCHI is not named.

This is a first draft and I realize that there may be mistakes. My head hurts too much to think about it right now, but if you have suggestions of corrections please let me know.

The Tumblr version is somewhat hard to read, so you can download a high resolution version below:

Baudrillard Goes Cross-Country:

Hi all, this is a new project I am going to be starting. I leave this Tuesday (May 31st) for Philadelphia on the first leg of a trip around the country. The idea struck me today: What does this country need more of? Hope. This is why I am making one hundred posters with my pal Baudrillard’s quote on it. I’m going to put these up in cities, rest stop bathrooms, sign posts, wherever!

Now I need some things from you guys. If you could reblog this it would be so awesome. I want to get the word out so people will start looking for things, or at least know about them in case they see them. I will be taking pictures the whole way along with where exactly they are and will try to put that info up on the web as soon after it is gathered.

Thanks dudes!

If you’re really worried about the Rapture or raptors or whatever, remember two things: first, the guy predicting the Rapture also predicted it in 1994. So … yeah. And secondly, the only people afraid of raptors are the people who don’t know how to bite first.
